House Music

So, I've been listening to this song "A Pain that I'm Used To", by Depeche Mode. To quote Dave the Lighting Guy from Orgazmo, I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin', but I think Depeche Mode is a sweet band.

It actually gets a bit more embarrassing. I'm listening to the tracey/housey remix of Depeche Mode.

You can download it (legally) here, if you want. It's really good.

Some people -- most people, actually -- refer to all electronic music "techno". Then there are the people for whom "techno" is one very specific subgenre of electronic music, and will correct you in a highly condescending manner if you suggest otherwise.

I hate those people. I suspect if their life had taken a slightly different turn, they'd be scoffing at someone for having referred to a ship as a Klingon Bird of Prey, when clearly it has Romulan markings.

Dorks, in other words. And pedantic ones at that.

In their defense, though, that's the way music works these days. Nothing has any kind of broad appeal, and things just get stuffed into smaller sub-sub-sub-genres. I don't know the taxonomy of electronic music, though, and I don't care enough to learn. So I call everything electronic that's come out in the last 15 years "house" and don't usually get any complaints.

Anyway, every time I listen to house music, I have the same two thoughts pass through my head: "This is good stuff" and "This would be so much better if I were on Ecstacy". Uh, not that I've ever done Ecstacy, mind you. But, see, I have this friend. And he did it one time and said it was pretty good, and made house music sound fantastic.

This time, I had a third thought: "Man, the stereo system in this car is absolutely killer".

And that's my stupid thought for the day.

I would just like to inform you that this blog entry prompted me to download said Jacques Lu Cont dub. I have since become a disciple, trying in vain to get people to listen to and appreciate it the way I do. I personally like to take the old ipod out to the field beside my house and walk around in the freezing cold, dancing my little heart out to the driving beat of this delightful ditty.
Good work, scoop.
